Tottenham Hotspur to beat Chelsea in race to sign Belgium international

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to shore up their defense with the signing of Toby Alderweireld, the Sunday Times has revealed.

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Southampton and is also a target for Jose Mourinho's Chelsea according to reports.

At the start of the month he revealed that he will meet with Atletico Madrid to discuss the possibility of staying in England.

"I will go back to Spain next week and we will talk," Alderweireld told Sky Sports News HQ.

"We will see what happens. I hope a decision will be made quickly, otherwise it will be all summer.

"I don't know if Chelsea are interested but I have read a little bit in the press. Let's see what comes up and I will make a decision. We will see what clubs come in."
