Manchester United legend: Why Nemanja Matic's move to Old Trafford is a surprise

By

Manchester United legend Dennis Irwin is convinced the Red Devils will fight for the Premier League title now that Nemanja Matic has joined the club.

The Irishman says he was surprised after the Serbian signed from Chelsea.

He was a target for Jose Mourinho from the end of last season and will team-up with Paul Pogba and Michael Carrick in midfield.

"I was a little bit surprised by the fact Chelsea are selling to their rivals who will be challenging for the Premier league next year," Irwin told talkSPORT.

"But Matic has done a fantastic job for Chelsea over the last few years and I suppose it was a bit of a thank you [to let him join United].

"Manchester United have got a tremendous player, a tremendous holding player, and they've needed somebody of that ilk.

"I think it's a very good signing.

"I expect them to challenge [for the title] this year."
