Manchester United dealt blow in race for £42m defender

By

Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez says defender Sergio Ramos will "100%" stay at the club.

A confirmed target for Manchester United, the 29-year-old wants to leave the Bernabeu for a new challenge in Manchester according to reports.

But the Spaniard insists the defender is an important player ahead of next season.

"Sergio [Ramos] will be staying with us," Benitez is quoted as saying by the BBC.

"I insist that it is clear for me and the club, Sergio will be here.

"I have a lot of respect for Louis van Gaal, but Sergio will be staying with us.

"He is our player, our captain. I would like to see him at the beginning of the season, because he's a key player for us."
