Louis van Gaal gives injury update, opts not to comment on Bale rumours

By

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal says defender Chris Smalling will undergo a late fitness test ahead of the game against Newcastle United.

The 25-year-old suffered an injury two weeks ago against Southampton and has a small chance of making the squad for Friday's game against Alan Pardew's side.

"I don't think so, I am sorry. Maybe [Chris] Smalling. [Marouane] Fellaini is still not available," van Gaal told MUTV.

"Smalling is a question mark - I have to look tomorrow but it's always like that.

"For a few players it [this period] is fun because they are recovering quickly, but you also have players who are not recovering so quickly, so I have to rotate.

"My problem is I have a lot of injured players. That is the problem with these matches in the coming weeks."

Meanwhile, the Dutchman opted not to comment the transfer rumours linking Real Madrid's Gareth Bale with a move to Old Trafford.

"I cannot discuss that with you," van Gaal said.

"I discuss that with my CEO and not with anyone of the media."
