Liverpool set to beat Arsenal in battle to sign Charlton Athletic youngster

Liverpool FC are closing in on the signing of Charlton youngster Joe Gomez, with a deal set to be completed early next week, the Liverpool Echo reports.

Also linked with a possible move to Manchester City, Aston Villa and Hoffenheim, the 18-year-old is expected to join the Reds for £6m.

Last December, the Englishman confessed that he wants to play at the top level, revealing his admiration for former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

"I always looked up to Ferdinand when I was younger," he told the South London Press.

"He was an English centre-back at the top level - plus he was a ball-playing one too."
