Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says striker Rickie Lambert will start against Middlesbrough tomorrow evening.
The 32-year-old joined from Southampton during the summer transfer window but is yet to feature from the start for the Reds.
Liverpool suffered their third Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday but the manager insists the objective of the club is to win a trophy with the League Cup a major objective this season.
"As a team we need to be better," Rodgers said on Monday.
"We started poorly at the weekend and you see the results there is no easy game at this level.
"You will be tested physically and mentally at this level and you have to be ready to fight that.
"We got caught in those first few minutes but we need to better at that because ultimately it costs us.
"It is a long campaign and we have a lot of games. We haven't made a great start by any means but we'll improve.
"We need to concentrate on the game tomorrow night because we need to get through.
"We want to win a trophy this season, I've said that before and this competition is an opportunity to do that.
"This will be a game that he [Rickie Lambert] starts in.
"He's a wonderful player, a great technician and he makes really difficult for defenders.
"Hopefully he can get a goal in his first start."
