"Chelsea are confident" - Blues determined to make £50million defender their fifth summer signing

Chelsea are confident of landing Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk and will make a bid this week.

The Daily Star has claimed that the Blues are determined to make the Dutchman their fifth summer signing.

They endured a nightmare start to the Premier League campaign, losing at home against Burnley.

Manager Antonio Conte has urged his players to remain calm ahead of a tricky game away at Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.

But at the same time he wants to strengthen his squad ahead of a long campaign that will include tough Champions League games.

van Dijk has handed in a transfer request last week.

He is also a target for Arsenal and Liverpool but the Blues seem to be in pole position to secure his services.
