Russian giants join race to sign 27-year-old Chelsea defensive midfielder

By

Russian side Spartak Moscow have joined the race to sign Chelsea defensive midfielder Papy Djilobodji, Tutto Mercato Web has revealed.

The Senegalese joined Chelsea in the summer of 2015 but is yet to make his official debut for the club.

He was loaned out to Werder Bremen during this winter's transfer window and scored a late winner against Eintracht Frankfurt in the final game of the season to help Die Werderaner avoid relegation.

The 27-year-old's transfer to Stamford Bridge has made headlines after then-manager Jose Mourinho admitted that he did not personally pick the player.

"[Djilobodji] was not my choice," Mourinho said last year.

"He was the choice of someone I trust completely. That's the same thing.

"The person that told me Djilobodji could be a fantastic squad player for us is same who said [Kurt] Zouma could be fantastic."
