Sunderland joins Newcastle United in battle to sign Marco van Ginkel

By

Sunderland are ready to sign Marco van Ginkel on-loan from Chelsea, Metro reports.

Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad revealed last week that the 22-year-old was very close to signing for Newcastle United.

But Black Cats boss Dick Advocaat has identified the youngster as a possible target to strengthen his squad.

In April, agent Karel Jansen revealed that the Dutchman's desire was to stay at Chelsea although securing a regular place in Jose Mourinho's squad was always going to be difficult.

"We don't know yet – his future is unclear at the moment," Jansen told the Guardian in April.

"He is now playing regularly for Milan but we still have to discuss next season with Chelsea.

"I think it will be decided next month or by the start of the transfer window. But there is no pressure.

"The goal for Marco is to return to Chelsea so we will see what happens. It is all dependable on what they want to do."
