Arsene Wenger: Why I had a chance to but opted against signing Dimitri Payet for Arsenal

Dimitri Payet's inconsistency is the reason why Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has never made an attempt to bring him to the club.

The Frenchman was involved in a question and answer session on Twitter when he revealed that he often thought about making a move for the 29-year-old.

Payet was again on target for the French national team as they battled past Albania by 2-0 on Wednesday night.

"Yes. Often. Very often [I considered making a move for him]," Wenger told fans on Konbini.

"I have to say that I asked myself that question during my career.

"And I also have to say that I decided against it because he was not consistent. I have never doubted that he had enough talent to play in my team.

"I have been lucky enough in my club to always have very good players in his position and it was crowded!"
