Arsenal to challenge Tottenham Hotspur for strong Serie A defender


Arsenal are set to go head-to-head with Tottenham Hotspur to sign Roma defender Kostas Manolas, according to Metro.

The 24-year-old was a last-minute target for Chelsea on the last day of last summer's transfer window but the Giallorossi rejected all offers made for the centre back.

Roma are currently third in the Serie A and still with a chance to make it through the group stage of the Champions League.

And according to reports in Italy, boss Rudi Garcia is not ready to sell one of his most important defenders during the January transfer window.

Metro believes that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants to add depth to his defensive department after regular defenders Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny both suffered injuries this season.
