Rafa Benitez: The reason why we didn't sell Karim Benzema to Arsenal

Real Madrid manager Rafa Benitez says striker Karim Benzema was never on the market because he is "fundamental" to the club.

The Frenchman was a confirmed target for Arsenal before he ended speculation with a tweet earlier this week.

According to reports, the Gunners were ready to offer more than £40m to secure the player's services.

But Benitez was full of praise for the 27-year-old ahead of the home clash with Real Betis on Saturday night.

"Benzema is a great player," he told reporters.

"We need him to have continuity. He is fundamental for us in attack."
