Paul Merson explains why signing this player would make Arsenal title contenders

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson says the Gunners will not challenge for the title with Francis Coquelin as their only defensive midfielder option.

The 24-year-old was one of the most impressive players in the Arsenal midfield last season but Merson says the Frenchman lacks experience on the European stage.

And according to the 47-year-old, Barcelona's Sergio Busquets would be the perfect signing for the Gunners.

"Arsenal will not win the title with just Coquelin in the defensive midfield role," Merson is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.

"They are talking about them putting in a bid for Busquets - that would be a massive signing.

"Arsenal need an experienced player, especially when you get to the latter stages of the Champions League.

"You've got to remember that Coquelin was on loan last season at Charlton Athletic - now he is on the Arsenal team sheet."
