Abou Diaby: Why I signed for Olympique de Marseille and not Liverpool

By

Former Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby says returning to France was an opportunity he could not turn down.

The Frenchman was a target for West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool according to reports in England but decided to join Olympique de Marseille.

He spent almost a decade at North London but suffered a number of injuries that prevented him from making an impact in Arsene Wenger's squad.

"What motivated my choice was knowing which club would help me best medically," Diaby is quoted as saying by Express Sport.

"That was really my priority. I did have other offers. I had very, very good contacts with West Brom.

"Other clubs with whom I talked also put me in good conditions.

"But I found Marseille better. It is still a great French club. I said to myself, 'Why not go back to France?'"
