Arsenal to finally make move for a defender: Approach made for Germany international

By

Arsenal have joined Manchester United in the race to sign German defender Benedikt Howedes.

The 27-year-old is expected to leave Schalke 04 this summer and according to TuttoMercatoWeb, the centre back is Arsene Wenger's main target to strengthen the defensive department.

Last month, Schalke 04 CEO Horst Heldt admitted that the club's captain could leave in the summer transfer window.

"It's no secret that he could leave by exercising the release clause in his contract," Heldt told Die Welt.

"He is yet to take a decision but he is expected to take one very soon.

"Our desire is to keep him at the club."
